The tendency of people to think about things in a certain way unless acted upon by some external force. The rules and regulations we have grown to use to accomplish a goal. In order to be innovative, we often have to operate under different rules to allow for new thoughts and directions. In Steps 2 and 4 of our Systematic Innovation Process we use numerous “pattern breaking lenses” to break paradigms and psychological inertia to see things in a new light.
